Reference

The Army Body Fat Assessment compares circumferences of the neck, waist, and hips (for females) to height. The DA Form 5500/5501 method replaces the legacy tape test beginning in 2023. Soldiers must meet composition standards or enroll in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP) for remediation.

Soldiers who pass the ACFT with a score of 540 (and minimum 80 points in each event) are temporarily exempt from body fat assessment, but still must meet overall readiness expectations. Circumference measurements should be taken on bare skin, rounded to the nearest half-inch, and averaged over three readings for accuracy.

Measurement tips

  • Neck: measure just below the larynx; tape slightly downward to front.
  • Waist: measure at belly button level while exhaling normally.
  • Hips (female): measure over the fullest portion of the buttocks.
  • Avoid measuring right after meals, workouts, or hydration shifts.

Supplemental assessments

  • Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)
  • Bod Pod or 3D body scanning when available
  • Soldier Performance Readiness Center tracking
